Mario Macis

He is a member of the leadership team of the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative and is affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and the National Bureau of Economic Research.

His research examines how markets, incentives, institutions, and moral values shape individual behavior and public policy, especially in health and other domains where market-based solutions raise social and ethical questions. A central theme of his work is how people form attitudes toward markets, regulation, and new technologies, and how these attitudes affect economic and social outcomes. His research spans health, labor, development, and market design, with applications to blood, plasma, and organ donation; behavioral interventions to promote health-related behaviors; trust in health care systems; biobanking and participant engagement; and public attitudes toward emerging biomedical technologies.
